The 149th IPU Assembly was held in Geneva, Switzerland, for five days from Sunday, October 13, to Thursday, October 17, 2024. The delegation from the National Diet of Japan consists of two members of the House of Councillors, Mr. YOSHII Akira (delegation leader) and Ms. KISHI Makiko, as well as supporting staff.
From Monday, October 14 to Wednesday, October 16, General Debate: Harnessing science, technology and innovation (STI) for a more peaceful and sustainable future was held, during which Mr. Yoshii and Ms.Kishi each delivered a statement.
At a meeting of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Ms. Kishi made a statement during Debate on the theme of the next resolution entitled Parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-lasting impact of conflicts, including armed conflicts, on sustainable development. Also, Mr. Yoshii gave a presentation regarding proposed amendments to the draft outcome document during Preparations for the Parliamentary Meeting at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan.
The delegation also held meetings with delegations from Cambodia, Azerbaijan, and World Health Organization (WHO) as well as visited the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
